The other day over coffee, a magazine editor asked me; “With over two hundred posts,” – “Which have gotten the most traffic?” Off the top of my head, I knew the “How to Legally Bait Turkeys” is the most searched for: give it a try using bait turkeys or turkey bait. Other than that I suspected but did not know for sure. After doing some research here are the top eleven.

FWIW!
I drove by a wheat field.
Along the south side of the field, three nice toms strutted and twirled as a dozen or so hens meandered back and forth between the weeds and the open wheat.
I know the owner!
Sure enough! He said have at them!
If I’m lucky enough, may be we can get some more xrays with that non toxic shot.

What ? Using steel now ? The world will never be the same !!

Could be Tungsten or bismuth… Looking forward to more X-Ray’s as always Bubba!
X-RAY TIME!!!
😀
Charlie says
Not to worry about the steel. TSS–tungsten #9’s work like #5 lead.
Charlie says
That’s the way to do it FirstBubba, good luck getting the X-Ray material. 🙂

Turkey Doggo Vic is surely the most highly rated ever right here on CharlieElk.com! I bet the analytics are misrepresentation due to age of posts or other factors. Vic’s rating is 12/10 A+
I am reconsidering Vizla’s not being hardy enough in the cold weather for my needs. I could get such a doggo protective gear against the cold.

I concur, however, apparently there is a LOT of hunters who bait turkeys even though I don’t think there is any state where it’s legal. The post concerning baiting is using audio to lure the turkeys into roosting where you can get chance at them. Bet the “baiters” groan when there is not hot food item recommended.

I am pretty sure it is legal to bait turkeys in Texas, at least most of Texas if not all of it.
I also think its legal in Kansas. I looked at the KS regs but couldn’t find anything saying it was legal or illegal. Not finding anything saying its illegal usually means it is legal.
I agree with you though Charlie, illegal baiting of turkeys does take place.
Charlie says
Forgot about TX they even bait quail and pot shoot em while they’re feeding in the open.
Baiting turkeys in the spring is probably not that useful most gobblers I shoot do not have anything in their crops. Apparently, they spend all their time mating and responding to sounds. Late fall and winter is another story this is when the market hunters of old would lay trenches of grain. When the turkeys came in to feed the marketeers would line up as many heads as they could to save ammo.
FirstBubba says
Baiting isn’t legal in all Texas counties.
In east Texas, they are still trying to establish a population. Two many 2 legged vermin!
In Oklahoma, you can’t hunt within 100 yards of a feeder.
Charlie says
The one thing about Texas it’s so big you really can not categorize it.

Happy to hear you are reconsidering your prejudice against Vizslas. LOL
Vic has been bred, so hopefully, I will have “son of Vic” soon.
N.C.L.W. says
LOL!!!
Wonderful! Those are gorgeous pups pictured and Vic’s too shall be the best. Surely, we all eagerly await the arrival of “Son of Vic” 🙂

Now that “Son of Vic” has got me thinking a little.
How do you pick a call name for your dog Charlie? Or anybody for that matter. Do you have to see the dog first and live with it a bit, or is the name already picked before the pup is home?
I like a name that I can have a variation of that is easy say/shout to call the dog, and my dog’s names have a tree theme to them.
Like; Tamarack Loose Needles…call name Rack
Birchwood Bark….call name Birch
Tag Alder Tangle…call name Tag
Rough Cutt…..call name Cutt
FirstBubba says
Short, single syllable name for a dog.
Makes commands, calling and corrections easier.
Charlie says
Dog names pop into my head, or I read something about a dog named “Groucho” which gets me thinking. The name is decided before the pup is picked up. That way the name can be used immediately on the ride home. It needs to be distinctive so when I call only my dog comes.
Son of Vic will not be my new pup’s name; perhaps Turk or Key.
My favorite names, should a retriever come into my life; Waitress call name Tress or if applicable Waiter!
FirstBubba says
Troy named his dog, “U-No”.
“What’s your dogs name?”
“U-No.”
“No I don’t, what’s his name?”
etc, etc, etc…
