July 13, 2017 by Charlie 11 Comments

Poults gobbling!? I had never heard or seen this before my buddy Shane Simpson at Calling all Turkeys brought this my attention.

Turkeys continue to amaze.

    LMBO!
    THAT Is crazy! …AND awesome!
I note that these are domestic birds.
Makes me wonder if the wild variety “gobbles” also!
What a give away for a varmint!
Coyote “Yips!” and a tender young dinner says, “Right here!”!
You know Charlie, next spring, despite ticks, chiggers and snakes, I’m going to have to try for some photos of my own!

Reminds me of the Jerry Clower story about the mustard sardines!
“Brummy has flung a cravin’ on me!”

The information I have is these are wild turkeys being raised in captivity.

From what I understood from reading that article was, that the mama hen was killed and the nest was found, the guy took the nest and gave it to the DNR who had an injured hen, she set on the nest until they hatched. The bids were going to be released back into the wild.
If this is the same group I’m thinking it is?

Could be, I have not heard the back story about these birds. I was so taken with the cute gobbles and just hurried up the post.

    Amazing!

I recall hearing similar sounds in the woods last year… Now, I am wondering if it was Poults that I heard. Hard to say on my end as I did not see the birds, might be mistaken but I do believe I may have been blessed with a choir of baby Merriam’s Turkey voices.

Regardless, this is the cutest post ever!

P.S. – As an aside, I just wore out a pair of the same shoes that came in that same shoebox behind these sweet babies… I am now going with some Cabela’s Meindl boots. Hahaha!

Sometimes while calling during the summer months I have thought I heard tiny gobbles but just told myself the woodlands were distorting the sound. It is now clear that they surely were tiny gobbling turkeys.

Cute little things. Last Sunday I accidentally jumped a mama bird while clearing brush, but instead of following her all the poults flew up into the trees all around me. Some sat on branches within 10 feet of me. Wish I had my phone with me to video it. They were making noises, but nothing I could attach a name to. Obviously the mom was going crazy calling from a distance.

Wow!! That’s crazy. Never would’ve guessed that poults that size could or would gobble.

These are farmed raised, genetically wild turkeys (Rio Grande subspecies) that are raised by Joe and Susy Conyers for food and also used for making turkey decoys. They also sell the eggs and young to other “farmers”. There is actually a video floating on Facebook of a actual “wild” Osceola poult gobbling in Florida so to answer the question, yes, wild turkey poults will also gobble. 🙂
